President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. congratulated the Philippine National Women’s Football team for bagging the country’s first Asean Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Football championship on Sunday night.

On his official Facebook page, Marcos shared a photo of the Filipino team with the caption: “Congratulations on this historic victory!”.

Before the regional championship game, Marcos also sent good luck wishes to the “Filipinas” and expressed confidence that the Filipino team would win the championship.

“Allow me to just send my best and strongest and most fervent good luck wishes to our women’s football team who have managed to reach the finals and are now vying for the championship of the Asean Football Federation Finals,” he said in a video message on his official Facebook page.

Marcos said anything is possible with “teamwork” and “unity.”

“Talagang napakagaling ng Pinay at napakagaling ng Pinoy at nakita natin basta’t naman tayo’y may teamwork, tayo’y may pakisama sa isa’t-isa eh nakita naman umabot na kayo sa finals (The Pinay is really very good and the Pinoy is very good and we can see that as long as we have teamwork, we get along with each other and we can see that you have reached the finals),” he added.

The Philippine women’s football team won the AFF Women’s Championship after beating Thailand, 3-0, in the Sunday night final at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

They won their first-ever championship in the regional event blanking Thailand, perennially a known Asian football powerhouse in both the men’s and the women’s divisions, in the title game and exacting their revenge from their group stage loss last Tuesday.

This is the Philippines’ first championship in any AFF-sanctioned international tournament, getting to the chip first than their male counterparts, the Azkals.

The Filipinas as expected to continue preparing for next year’s FIFA World Cup which Australia and New Zealand are hosting. (PNA)
