In today’s modern world, acceptance when it comes to a romantic relationship between the genders grows not only in international countries but also in the Philippines. One significant openness in this topic is seen in the entertainment and film industries.

During the pandemic, some film directors took a bold step to showcase the boy love series on the Philippine online platform. These have received mixed reactions from the audience, noting that they are not used to seeing such content as most Filipinos are sensitive to tackling or watching such topics.

The growth of this openness to such a topic was boosted after the release of the boy love series, which also created a platform for the booming presence of girl love series or shows.

With this receptiveness to these kinds of genres in the country, artists are now more open to creating such projects to showcase support for such couples in real life and in the LGBTQ community in general.

Artists like Andrea Brillantes, Xyriel Manabat, and Nadine Lustre have expressed their opinions on doing such a project as having a girl partner on a series or movie.

During a press conference on their current series, Andrea and Brillantes openly disclosed that they wanted to try such roles on future projects and also to experience other genres in their acting careers.

“Feeling ko kung mag-o-on cam ako or on-screen na first kissing scene, gusto ko talaga sa babae, kasi feeling ko mas komportable ako ‘pag ganoon and feeling ko, walang ilanganan, less issue, less hassle. Experience siya eh, so parang fulfilling siya for an experience of an actress,” Xyriel said on an interview.

This was then supported by Andrea, as she also observed that, in terms of doing such a series, boy love is the common type that is highlighted, giving her the urge to also empower the presence of girl love in the country.

Nadine, on the other hand, sees that doing such a movie or series can also expand her acting skills, as she is willing to learn through challenges such as when she was asked for a possible remake of the Filipino movie “T-Bird At Ako.”

Even before, the Filipino entertainment industry has been releasing movies that showcase the LGBTQ community; hence, this was not spotlighted enough due to some mixed criticism from the audience.

But with the growing knowledge about the acceptance of the queer community, its members are hoping to find a broader field for them in the country that these films boost as they showcase some of their identities through providing entertainment.
