Love teams have always been part of the Philippine showbiz formula. Fans grow attached, pairings turn into brands, and the line between acting and real life often gets blurry. It’s fun to watch, until it starts feeling too real for everyone involved.

This is exactly the kind of conversation that suddenly pulled Liza Soberano back into the spotlight on January 15. She logged onto X, formerly known as Twitter, and noticed people were apologizing to her. Confused, she asked, “Why are people saying sorry to me? I’m so confused.”

Turns out, netizens were digging up her 2023 comments about love team culture and realizing she might have had a point. When someone explained this to her, Liza replied casually, “Well, thank you, I guess, hehe,” adding that she never really got to fully explain why she personally thinks love teams can be “dangerous.” She also acknowledged that this lack of explanation likely led to people getting offended back then.

Her old statements suddenly felt timely again because of the buzz around WillCa, the love team of Will Ashley and Bianca De Vera from Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition. Fans noticed that the two were spending their vacations separately and with different rumored companions.

Ironically, Liza herself was behind on the latest ships. In the middle of the online noise, she tweeted, “Wait now I’m even more confused hahaha. Gets na about love teams, but who are the shippers and who is being shipped?” When a user clarified that it was about WillCa, she simply replied, “Looking into this.”

Back in her earlier interviews, Liza had already described how love teams work in the Philippines. She compared them to celebrity couples like “Brangelina,” explaining how actors are often expected to appear as a real couple both on and off camera, and sometimes are pushed to only work with each other throughout their careers. According to her, this setup can quietly limit an actor’s choices, not just in roles, but in personal life as well.

The recent WillCa situation showed just how intense fan reactions can get. Some fans admitted feeling hurt or frustrated, with a few fan accounts even taking a short break from social media. Will also faced criticism from fans supporting the BreKa or MikBrent pairing of Mika Salamanca and Brent Manalo. Later on, MikBrent’s official fan club released a statement saying Will was not part of the original plan, but joined Mika along with other friends.

What started as a resurfaced quote turned into a live example of what Liza was talking about years ago. Whether fans agree with her or not, the sudden apologies suggest that many are now seeing the pressure behind the kilig—and realizing that love teams may not always be as simple as they look on screen.
