After a 10-month hiatus, two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo made a powerful return to competition at the Asian Gymnastics Championships held in Jecheon, Republic of Korea.

Yulo, the trailblazing Filipino gymnast who earned Olympic gold in floor exercise and vault at Paris 2024, marked his comeback by clinching the floor title and securing three bronze medals in the all-around, vault, and parallel bars events.

The strong performance came as a surprise even to Yulo himself. On Instagram, he wrote that all he prayed for during this comeback to competing was a healthy and steady performance, but “God gave him so much more than he could ever wish for.”

He went on to reflect on the deeper meaning behind his return. “I’m grateful for the chance to move again, to compete with my passion for gymnastics, and to carry every lesson from the past year/s with me,” Yulo said. “This comeback is personal—it’s only by grace, and with faith, patience, and the right people around you, everything finds its way back,” he added.

Looking ahead, the 25-year-old is set to compete at the World Championships in Jakarta this October. With the LA28 Olympic Games on the horizon, Yulo has made it clear that defending his titles remains one of his top priorities.

“To everyone who’s supported me through the quiet season, to God be all the glory,” he wrote. “We’re back! ”

Caloy’s groundbreaking performances and thoughtful humility will certainly pave the way for more Filipinos to make their name in gymnastics and bring pride to the country on the international stage of sports.
