Apple ended nearly a decade of speculation on September 9, unveiling the iPhone Duo at its “Surprise and Shine” event in Cupertino. It is the company’s first foldable phone, its first iPhone with two displays, and its most expensive handset ever. Everything below is drawn from what Apple confirmed on stage and published on its Newsroom, product page and tech specs. Where Apple has stayed silent, this article says so rather than filling the gap.
The Price
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. The full storage ladder runs $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB.
For context, that entry price sits $800 above the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro and $700 above the $1,299 iPhone 18 Pro Max announced at the same event. Apple is also offering an Apple Upgrade lease starting at $57.99 a month on a 24-month term in the US. Pricing outside the United States was not published at announcement.
When You Can Buy It
Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time. The device goes on sale Friday, October 23 across the United States and more than 70 other countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom. A further 28 countries and regions follow on Friday, October 30.
That puts the Duo roughly a month behind the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which ship September 18. If your market is not in the first wave, check Apple’s published country list before assuming an October 23 date.
The Two Screens
The Duo opens like a book. The inner display is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED at 1878 by 2670 pixels and 430 ppi, with a nano-texture finish. The outer cover display is 5.4 inches, 1398 by 2034 pixels at 460 ppi. Both run ProMotion at up to 120Hz adaptive refresh, with 1000 nits typical brightness and 3000 nits peak outdoors.
Folded, the device is 11.3mm thick. Open, it measures 5.2mm, which Apple says makes it the thinnest iPhone it has ever built. It weighs 254 grams. The hinge is assembled from more than 100 individual components.
Touch ID, Not Face ID
This is the change most existing iPhone owners will feel first. The Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button. There is no Face ID. Apple also dropped the Action Button on this model, though the Camera Control remains, positioned below the power button.
Cameras
The rear system is a dual 48MP setup: a Fusion Main at f/1.6 and a Fusion Ultra Wide at f/2.2. There is no telephoto lens on the Duo, a real gap against the iPhone 18 Pro line, which gained variable aperture this year.
For selfies and calls, there is a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer display and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inside panel.
Chip, Battery And Build
The Duo runs the same A20 Pro silicon as the iPhone 18 Pro, built on a 2nm process, with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine, paired with a vapor chamber for cooling. Apple did not disclose RAM, as is its habit.
Battery is a dual-cell design. Apple quotes up to 44 hours of video playback on the cover display and up to 31 hours on the inner display. Charging is 60W wired, with MagSafe wireless support. The frame is Grade 5 titanium, front and back are Ceramic Shield, and the device carries an IP68 rating.
Connectivity comes from Apple’s own N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, plus the C2 modem with mmWave in the US.
Software And Accessories
The Duo ships with iOS 27, including Split View for running two apps side by side on the inner screen and a reimagined StandBy mode built around the larger canvas. The Apple Intelligence features tied to this release, including the new Siri, are subject to regional availability, and Apple has flagged continuing regulatory friction in the European Union and China.
Apple Pencil support is coming, but not at launch. Apple says the $79 Apple Pencil (USB-C) will work with the Duo later this year. The Apple Pencil Pro is not supported.
Two first-party accessories were announced: a Duo Folio with a built-in kickstand, and a two-piece Duo Case that wraps each half of the device separately.
What Apple Has Not Said
Apple did not publish RAM figures, did not give international pricing beyond the US, and has not detailed hinge durability cycle ratings. Reports that the shipping software build is iOS 27.1 rather than 27.0 have not been formally confirmed on the product page. Treat all three as open questions until Apple or teardowns settle them.
The Bottom Line
Apple has entered the foldable category five years after Samsung, and it has done so without pretending the compromises do not exist. No telephoto. No Face ID. No Action Button. Apple Pencil support arriving after launch. What buyers get in exchange is a 7.6-inch tablet-class display that folds into a pocket, flagship silicon, and a build that is thinner open than any iPhone before it.
At $1,999 to $3,199, this is not a volume product and Apple has not positioned it as one. The real test arrives October 23.
