The World Wide Fund for Nature (WEF) has recognized Barangay Lapasan here for its effective solid waste management program.

Barangay Chairman Julito Ogsimer on Wednesday said the WWF likely noticed their community-driven efforts, particularly the Sitio SWM Warriors volunteer group that promotes proper waste segregation and disposal.

“Their presence encourages residents to refrain from dumping trash in non-designated areas, especially in canals and drainage systems,” Ogsimer said.

The barangay installed trash traps in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to prevent waste from flowing into Macajalar Bay, protecting marine life from pollution.

WWF donated trash bins and a garbage collection vehicle to enhance waste management in the area.

Despite these achievements, Ogsimer acknowledged challenges in one of the city’s most populated villages, noting some residents still don’t cooperate with cleanliness efforts. (PNA)
