The Philippines logged 28,007 new coronavirus infections and 4,471 recoveries Tuesday.

The latest Covid-19 bulletin showed that there are 181,016 active cases while total recoveries rose to 2,792,946, or 92.3 percent of 3,026,473 infections since the pandemic started in March 2020.

Tuesday’s tally of fresh cases is lower than Monday’s 33,169.

Out of the active cases, 170,873 are mild, 2,863 are moderate, 5,521 are asymptomatic, 1,464 are severe, and 295 are critical.

“Of the 28,007 reported cases today, 27,604 (99%) occurred within the recent 14 days – Dec. 29, 2021 to Jan. 11, 2022,” the DOH reported.

The regions with the most cases in the recent two weeks were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 15,256 or 55 percent of new infections; Calabarzon, 5,861 or 21 percent; and Central Luzon, 3,064 or 11 percent.

The death toll is now 52,511 with 219 new deaths, representing 1.74 percent of overall cases.

“Of the 219 deaths, 17 occurred in January 2022 (8 percent), 2 in December 2021 (1 percent), 5 in November 2021 (2 percent), 26 in October 2021 (12 percent), 41 in September 2021 (19 percent), 43 in August 2021 (20 percent), 30 in July 2021 (14 percent), 21 in June 2021 (10 percent), 22 in May 2021 (10 percent), 2 in April 2021 (1 percent), 2 in March 2021 (1 percent), and 8 in January 2021 (4 percent) due to the late encoding of death information to COVIDKaya,” the DOH said.

About 44 percent of 77,479 who were tested according to the January 7 data turned out positive for Covid-19.

“Sixty-four duplicates were removed from the total case count as 52 of these are recoveries,” the DOH said.

Meanwhile, 184 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after validation.

All laboratories were operational on January 9 but 12 were not able to submit their data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System.

The DOH said the 14 laboratories contribute, on average, 4.2 percent of samples tested, and 5.5 percent among positive individuals based on data in the past 14 days.

To date, 41 percent of 3,400 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 44 percent of 19,600 isolation beds, 41 percent of 13,300 ward beds, and 18 percent of 3,000 ventilators are used by patients with Covid-19 nationwide.

Meanwhile, 54 percent of 1,100 ICU beds, 60 percent of 4,500 isolation beds, 64 percent of 4,400 ward beds, and 27 percent of 1,000 ventilators dedicated to patients with Covid-19 are in use in the NCR. (PNA)
