Filipino-American speed skater Peter Groseclose bagged the Philippines’ first medal in the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior World Cup 2 in Bormio, Italy, from November 14-16, 2024.

Groseclose, 17, skated his way to place third and take home bronze in the men’s 500-meter short-track speed skating, competing with 47 countries.

Philippine Union Skating President Nikki Cheng felt immense pride for Groseclose’s historic moment.

“We’re happy because this is the first ISU World Cup event where the Philippines finished with a medal,” Cheng said.

“It was something we were really fighting for and somehow expecting because of his fifth-place finish in the Winter Youth Olympic games,” she added.

Groseclose is also preparing for various Olympic qualifiers and junior division tournaments next year.

“We do see him inspiring the youth along with Hans Buemio, our homegrown talent. He also made the time for the Junior World Championships so we expect them both in March,” Cheng said.

Along with Groseclose, Hans Buemio represented the Philippines in the ISU Junior World Cup 2.

Koo Minseung of Korea claimed the gold while Victor Chartrand of Canada took the silver medal.
