There is no easy way to say this: staying on top of being a mom is no breeze.

Between housework, errands, and child-rearing, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. Balancing these responsibilities alongside a career does not make it any easier. With such a tight schedule, the only easy thing to do is neglect self-care.

Self-care is the conscious and continuous practice of nurturing your own well-being and quality of life. Seemingly indulgent at first, committing to self-care in any way you can goes a long way in reducing feelings of exhaustion, stress, and, sadly, even depression that often affect mothers.

Read our quick tips to incorporate self-care into your routine, and thank yourself later!

Keep things in line

When tasks and appointments become overwhelming, putting them in order is the best way to combat disorder. Stay organized with a planner, calendar, or list for yourself and your family. This way, you can avoid last-minute, unpleasant surprises like sudden school projects or forgotten deadlines. Prioritize tasks using a system of your choosing to help prevent burnout.

Make room for yourself

Before you dot the i’s and cross the t’s on your calendar, pencil in some “me time” and stick to it. Whether it’s a solo coffee date with a good book, a pampering day, lunch with a friend, or a yoga class, treat it with the same importance as other appointments. Commit to it—you’ve earned it!

Back to Basics

Basic healthy lifestyle habits promote the physical health, mental well-being, and sustained energy levels needed to manage the demands of motherhood. For your diet, maintain a healthy one comprising lean meats, low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Skip sugary drinks, alcohol, and high-fat foods, and drink 6–8 cups of water daily. Combined with sufficient sleep (7–8 hours) and even a bit of daily physical activity, you can better handle challenging circumstances and enjoy a better quality of life.

Share the Load

You don’t have to go through it alone! If asking for help feels like a sign of weakness, consider a different perspective. See it as caring for your family, practicing self-love, and showing strength. Asking for help benefits everyone, and it can be valuable for your kids. We are wired as humans to support each other, and it’s okay to seek help. Reach out to a trusted, well-intentioned loved one, and advocate for your needs even when it’s hard. What could be better than having a few more precious moments for yourself?

Your health and well-being affect your family too. Self-care won’t make you a bad mom; it’ll make you a better mom. By also honoring your own needs and wants, you’ll become even more unstoppable at taking care of everyone! Keep that momentum going!
