The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs) have teamed up to integrate scientific data into energy planning.

Energy Undersecretary and Task Force on Energy Resiliency Chair Felix William Fuentebella on Wednesday said, “energy resilience is only as strong as its weakest link.”

Thus, the memorandum of agreement signing on Tuesday for the integration of Phivolcs’ GeoRiskPH platform, which has comprehensive hazard maps, risk profiles, and exposure data with DOE’s Energy Disaster Information Management System (EDIMS), which has real-time disaster monitoring capabilities.

“Integrating robust scientific data into our resilience planning is paramount to improving the reliability of power and fuel for Filipinos, especially as climate change intensifies. Together with DOST-Phivolcs, we are forging a path towards a safer, more secure Philippines, where energy remains a reliable, sustainable, and safe lifeline for all,” Fuentebella said in a news release on Wednesday.

In 2018, the two government agencies already partnered for the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS), targeted for a fast damage analysis, reduced downtime, and economic losses after seismic events.

“Aligned with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision of a ‘Bagong Pilipinas’, we are committed to delivering reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy to every Filipino household, empowering communities and lighting the path to a brighter tomorrow,” Fuentebella added. (PNA)
