For nearly five decades, Lea Salonga has given her voice to some of the most beloved characters and stories in musical theater and film. On September 4, 2026, Hollywood gave something back. In a ceremony held on the storied sidewalk outside the historic Pantages Theatre, Salonga was honored with the 2,855th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first Filipina — and first Filipino — ever to receive the distinction.
A Long Time Coming
The late-morning ceremony at 6255 Hollywood Boulevard placed Salonga’s star in the Live Performance category, a fitting recognition for an artist whose career has spanned Broadway stages, animated film scores, concert halls, and television screens across four continents. The Manila International Film Festival nominated her for the honor through the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which has administered the Walk of Fame since 1960.
A crowd gathered to watch the unveiling, cheering as Salonga’s name was set permanently into the pavement alongside generations of entertainment legends. It was a moment steeped in symbolism: after more than nine decades of the Walk of Fame’s existence, a Filipino artist was finally being written into its history.
From Manila To The Boulevard
Salonga’s path to Hollywood Boulevard began far from Los Angeles. She made her professional stage debut at age seven in a Manila production of The King and I, and released her first solo album at just ten years old. Her breakout came in 1989 when she originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon in the West End before bringing the performance to Broadway in 1991 — a portrayal that made her the first Filipino performer, and one of the first Asian actresses, to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
She would go on to become one of the first Asian actresses to play both Éponine and Fantine in Les Misérables on Broadway, and later took on the role of Madame Thénardier in the musical’s touring production earlier in 2026. Her stage résumé also includes Once on This Island, Flower Drum Song, and Old Friends alongside Bernadette Peters.
It was her work with Disney, however, that introduced Salonga’s voice to a global audience of children and families. In 1992, she provided the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, performing “A Whole New World” — a song that went on to win both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Six years later, she returned to lend her voice to the title character of Mulan, delivering the emotional ballad “Reflection.” In recognition of that body of work, Disney inducted her as an official Disney Legend in 2011.
Looking Forward
Even as she marked this milestone, Salonga’s career shows no sign of slowing. She is set to voice the lead villain in DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming fantasy film Forgotten Island, premiering later this month. Two days after her Walk of Fame ceremony, she was also honored with the Icon Award at the Manila International Film Festival’s Closing Night Gala.
During her acceptance remarks at the Pantages, Salonga reflected on the scarcity of representation she encountered early in her career and the mentors who helped open doors for her along the way. She expressed hope that the star would serve as a marker of possibility for the next generation — a signal to young Filipino artists that a path to Hollywood exists, even when it once seemed impossible to find.
Her star now sits permanently on Hollywood Boulevard, a small brass-and-terrazzo marker carrying an outsized meaning: proof that a voice first discovered on a stage in Manila could, decades later, help reshape whose stories get told, and celebrated, in Hollywood.
