The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has deployed around 100 more enforcers along the stretch of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa) to help manage the traffic situation following the one month-closure of the Timog flyover.

The flyover’s southbound lane was closed to motorists last June 25 for repair.

“We will be assisted by the PNP-HPG as well as the local government unit of Quezon City at the inner roads,” MMDA chair Romando Artes said in an interview Monday.

He and other officials from the MMDA, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), and Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (I-ACT) monitored the traffic along Edsa Southbound.

To date, he said the traffic situation on Edsa – Kamuning service road is “still manageable” and other traffic solutions are being considered such as intensifying clearing operations to remove road obstructions such as illegally-parked vehicles in alternate routes.

“MMDA is also considering making adjustments on the traffic lights, if necessary,” he said.

He reminded motorists, as well as cyclists and motorcycle riders, to take alternate routes.

“There are four identified alternate routes for motorists. Vehicles coming from Edsa southbound may turn right at either Mother Ignacia Avenue, Panay Avenue, Scout Albano, or Scout Borromeo,” Artes said.

Signs were installed along these alternate routes to help guide motorists.

The repairs include the reconstruction of the damaged bridge diaphragm and the construction of a new bridge deck slab for the flyover — spanning 30 meters. (PNA)
